Hi Guys and Gals here we have the all new Plarail HD300 Hybrid diesel, this is a new release from Plarail for 2013 and it accompanies recent releases like the curve set and the yellow victor set.
This locomotive is different in real life from a normal diesel electric, where a normal diesel electric has a Diesel motor that provides electricity directly to a series of electric motors that drive the wheels, this Hybrid version has a smaller diesel motor that provides electricity to a large bank of batteries and those batteries provide electricity to the wheel motors, Thus being more efficient with fuel and emissions from the diesel motor because it does not have to run all the time. The real life version is a shunting locomotive and has proved successful in trials and is now in full production. This model is number 2 so the second loco of the production run.
The loco is geared for slow speed and pulling power and as a shunting loco that is correct. It runs on a single AA battery contained on the underside of the loco and is slightly heavier than the older DD51 also by plarail. it runs almost silently and stays on track very well, it climbed the hill with very little slowdown.
It is a great looking loco and an all new design, the hand rails/grab irons could have been done differently or left of all together as I don't particularly like the way they have done them but I do understand why from a durability stand point. the loco is red to increase visibility when working in the rail yards shunting cars and wagons etc where it can be very dangerous to work. It also features yellow and black warning stripes on the front and rear. it does have allot of stickers but they are well applied and correctly.
So a good locomotive I can't say anything bad about how it runs although a bit slow there is a reason for that. It is a worthwhile purchase as are all first release plarail trains for collectors because they will not be available forever.
