This Panasonic 3DO commercial captures the system right as it was trying to push John Madden Football and Crash N Burn as a launch incentive in 1994, and the console behind that promo had a genuinely strange business model. The 3DO Company, founded by former EA boss Trip Hawkins, never actually manufactured a single console itself. Instead it licensed the hardware design out to other companies, with Panasonic, Goldstar and Sanyo each building their own competing versions of the same basic machine.
That setup made the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer one of the most expensive consoles of its era, launching on October 4, 1993 at a steep 700 dollars, since hardware makers like Panasonic had to actually turn a profit on the console itself rather than making it up through game sales the way Nintendo and Sega did. It was marketed less as a video game console and more as a full multimedia machine that could also handle music, photo and video discs, and Time Magazine even named it the best product of all of 1993. At launch, the only available game was Crash N Burn, a futuristic combat racer from Crystal Dynamics that came bundled with the system.
John Madden Football arrived a few months later in May 1994, built by High Score Productions for EA Sports, using digitized footage of the real John Madden and full motion video clips of team plays, and it became one of the system's genuine standout titles. The promotional offer shown in this exact ad, giving away both games together between May and June of 1994, lines up perfectly with Madden Football's actual release window. Despite strong early sales in Japan and a respectable European launch later that year, the 3DO ultimately could not compete with the established and far cheaper Genesis and Super Nintendo in North America.
