This song title "One" was originally written and recorded by songwriter/singer Harry Nilsson and made famous by American rock band Three Dog Night whose cover in 1969 made it to the #5 on the Billboard Hot 100. They became one of the most successful bands during the late 1960's and early 1970's.The lyrics are based on a phone call Nilsson made hearing only a busy signal which became the opening sequence of the song. Mainly a cover band, Three Dog Night helped introduce mainstream audiences to the work of many songwriters that also included Paul Williams, Randy Newman, and Leo Sayer. Supposedly, TDN adapted their name from indigenous Australians who customarily sleep, on cold nights, in burrows embracing one or two feral dogs (dingos). On colder freezing days it was considered a "three dog night".
