Jacksonville Sheriff's Office Sheriff T.K. Waters and Chief Alan Parker shared details about an officer-involved shooting after a man tried to attack a woman and a JSO officer. This happened along Normandy Boulevard on the Westside around 11 a.m. Sunday morning.
Earlier in the week, the suspect, 40-year-old Michael Lee Wright, overdosed on drugs. He was believed to still be using drugs by his girlfriend. His girlfriend reported to us she decided she wanted to leave the home, but when she tried to leave, Wright blocked her vehicle and threw things at her. She was able to drive to a nearby gas station and ask an officer to escort her back to the home so she could gather her things. Officer Patrick Burke escorted her to the home. When he arrived, Wright immediately began attacking his patrol vehicle. The officer got out of his patrol car, noticed Wright had something in his hands, and told Wright to put it down. Wright then charged at the officer, and that’s when the officer shot him. The officer then rendered medical aid until the paramedics arrived. Wright was taken to the hospital but he did not survive.
During the initial investigation, a pair of scissors was discovered under the patrol car moments after the shooting.
During the initial investigation, it was revealed Wright told his girlfriend he was going to die today. He also told the officer ‘Go ahead, kill me’ multiple times during their interaction.
This is the 8th officer-involved shooting this year. The State Attorney's Office is investigating. Once its investigation is complete, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office will conduct its own investigation.
