A Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office patrol officer was arrested this afternoon after he struck a man in his custody early Monday morning. Sheriff T.K. Waters is sharing the details of the arrest in a public briefing.
On Monday, July 13, Officer Shane Saydek arrested 43-year-old Kaashif Griffin for Possession of an Open Container in a Vehicle and Resisting an Officer. Griffin was extremely intoxicated when he was arrested, which led to Officer Saydek becoming more frustrated with him. While Griffin was handcuffed on jail property, Officer Saydek struck him. The interaction was captured on the officer’s body-worn camera.
A second officer witnessed Officer Saydek strike Griffin and reported it to his chain of command. The JSO Integrity Unit launched an investigation and gathered the probable cause to arrest Saydek for battery this afternoon. Saydek has been suspended, and JSO will seek his termination.
This is the 6th arrest of a JSO employee by our agency this year.
