"How cells, sense and adapt to oxygen availability"
The atmosphere of the earth consist of 21% oxygen which is vital for animal life. Oxygen plays an important role
in oxidation reactions in the cell and generation of ATP. However the fundamental question of how cells, can sense
oxygen was unclear.
The researchers discovered a transcription factor HIF (hypoxia inducible factor) that regulates gene expression
in low levels of oxygen. When the levels of oxygen is high, the HIF gets hydroxylated and is degraded by the
proteasomal complex.
