My submission for the Hardware Jams “Drone” Weekend Challenge.
I’m currently rebuilding my modular case, so with the modular out of action it was a great opportunity to revisit no input mixing. This involves patching various feedback loops on a mixer and using that as your sound source. I love exploring the sounds in feedback and this time set up a fairly simple patch so that the drone was a bit more predictable and could be modulated slowly. I really enjoy seeing how close you can get before the patch breaks down into screaming feedback as often the most interesting sounds can be found where there is a pull in various directions from different parts of the feedback patch.

Saturday, May 24th is International Drone Day. For this weekend’s challenge we take a dive into drones - not the flying kinds, but musical drones, sustained notes or sounds. The challenge is to make a jam with some droning elements. You can go full experimental and make a minimalist jam with just drones. Or you can take a melodic approach and think of melodies contrasting movement and static elements (maybe research pedal points in music theory?). Or you could look at folk music for inspiration: bagpipes are a good example of a melodic instrument with drones.

I'm a strong believer in continuous improvement and always trying to learn something new. It was great to experiment with no input mixing again and applying some effects to the output from the mixer this time.
