Strength training is a very important but often neglected part of the long process of becoming (or creating, if you are an instructor) an effective and efficient martial artist, especially if you attend (or run) a martial arts school more focused on self defense than competition. Interestingly, it is precisely the crowd of the martial arts / self defense schools than is often in more need of developing additional strength, explosiveness, endurance and overall athleticism, as it is mostly comprised of non-genetically elite individuals of all kinds of body types, ages, fitness levels and backgrounds, compared to the exclusively young and quite athletic people that overwhelmingly frequent combat sports clubs.
Even though this video does contain a good number of exercises that can be useful to boxers, wrestlers and MMA fighters, its main goal is to provide a curriculum of exercises and a roadmap that will help martial arts and self defense instructors to introduce short, but intense and varied, sessions of strength training within the space and time of a martial arts class - or if this is not possible, in separate strength training classes within the martial arts school, using basic and relatively inexpensive equipment (kettlebells, iron plates, rubber bands, sledgehammers, medicine balls etc). Some of the exercises presented are well known and established among coaches all over the world, but others are less known (or even unknown) to the general sports public, as they come from traditional methods of strength training for boxers and wrestlers in the old USSR and republics of modern Russia.
Chapters include: Core strength training, General strength building exercises for beginners, General strength building exercises for advanced students, Specific exercises for martial art purposes, Explosiveness exercises, Skill AND strength building exercises, Sledgehammer exercises and Wrist and Grip exercises, in a total of more than 80 different strength building exercises for martial artists!
