June is National Safety Awareness Month!
Lt. Paul Bloom taught a self-defense class, and here is a condensed version for those who might not be able to attend or request one. Lt. Bloom speaks about personal safety, situational awareness, as well as self-defense tactics and equipment!
Personal Safety is all about preventing yourself from becoming a victim. The first step to maintaining your safety is taking the time to be aware and assess your surroundings before putting yourself into a potentially unsafe situation. Also, going somewhere with a friend or group of friends can help keep you safe.
If you are approached by an attacker, remember that they are after your belongings, which are replaceable in most cases. Creating distance between yourself and the items they want can help you get away!
In the event your safety is at risk and you are being attacked, there are several devices that can help you get away. Pepper spray is an effective long-range tool with a lasting effect on an attacker. Tasers and stun guns are also effective but most useful at close range.
Other hands-on tactics can also be used in close-range situations. It is important to remember "Hard to soft. Soft to Hard." when striking an attacker in order to prevent additional harm to yourself. Some practical techniques are a Hammer Fist Strike, Palm Heel Strike, Elbow to Stomach, and Eye Rake. These moves can cause an attacker enough pain or discomfort to afford you time to escape.
Say Safe and Stay Aware at all times!
