On June 6th, while on patrol, Deputy Sampedro pulled into the Circle K at E. Highway 315 and E. Highway 316 and conducted a routine license plate check on a green Ford Focus. The check revealed the registered owner, Jerry Wade Gibson, had a suspended driver’s license.
Deputy Sampedro attempted a traffic stop, but Gibson chose to flee. He eventually stopped his vehicle near NE 142nd Place and NE 117th Court, then took off on foot.
Air-One responded to assist, along with K-9 Corporal DeMarco and his partner, K-9 Koen, and Deputies Sampedro and Thompson. Air-One quickly spotted Gibson hiding on a rooftop. Deputies issued commands, but Gibson ignored them and ran across the roof before jumping down and continuing to flee through nearby yards.
Despite repeated commands to stop, Gibson kept running. K-9 Koen was released and successfully apprehended him. As deputies moved in to place him in handcuffs, Gibson began striking and grabbing at K-9 Koen, and at one point jumping on top of him. Fearing for the K-9’s safety, Deputy Sampedro deployed his Taser, causing Gibson to release the dog. He was then secured and taken into custody.
What started as a simple traffic stop ended in a list of serious charges, including: Fleeing and Eluding Law Enforcement, Touch/Strike to Cause Harm to a Police Service Animal, Resisting Arrest, Driving While License Suspended or Revoked (DWLSR), Failure to Register a Motor Vehicle (turns out the tag didn’t belong to that vehicle)
Actions have consequences and trying to outrun the law will only make things worse.
