The Airone is a Moto Guzzi motorcycle in production between 1939 and 1957. Presented at the end of 1939 as heir to the P.E. 250, the new quarter-litre from Mandella was equipped with a four-speed gearbox (against the three of the forebear) and an engine increased to 246 cm³ (9.5 HP of maximum power, 95 km/h). Initially equipped with a tubular frame, shortly after marketing this was replaced by one made of pressed sheet metal, cheaper to produce. Put back into production in 1945, after the Second World War, the suspension was updated in 1947 with the adoption of a telescopic fork designed by Carlo Guzzi himself and a pair of rear hydraulic shock absorbers, while at the end of 1948 a aluminum with enclosed distribution organs. In 1949 the Airone Sport was marketed, with an engine boosted to 13.5 HP (120 km/h top speed) thanks to a new camshaft, a Dell'Orto SS 25 carburettor and a more compact combustion chamber. The chassis has also been revised, with the rear part of the frame in tubes, aluminum drum brakes with a larger diameter, lightened mudguards and adjustable compass rear shock absorbers. From 1951 the chassis, rear suspension and brakes of the Sport were also used on the touring version.
In 1954 a new muffler was introduced, which was quieter than the previous one: the performance of the Sport suffered as a result, dropping to 12 HP and 110 km/h. In 1956 the Sport went out of production, while the Turismo version remained on the price list for another year (especially for military supplies, for which Moto Guzzi had prepared an ad hoc version of the Airone in 1952).
