Every evening at dusk millions of bats emerge from a limestone cave perched high above Wat Tham Pha Ya in Loei Province, Thailand. I arrived at 4 p.m., just to be sure I didn't miss it. But by 6 p.m., only a few small groups of bats had emerged. All the information I'd read said the spectacle was over by 6 every night, so I was preparing to leave when my driver exclaimed, "Barbara, look!" Suddenly an unending thick ribbon of bats streamed into the sky. We watched for more than an hour and still they were pouring out of the cave.
