Also known as the Festival of Lights, the Hindu holiday of Tihar in Nepal lasts five days, with each day being devoted to a different animal. Day three, considered to be the most important day of Tihar, is devoted to cows, which are sacred to Hindus. They symbolize wealth and are considered mothers of the universe due to their ability to produce milk. Each family gives a "tika" (dot on the forehead, created with colored powder) to a cow, sprinkles them with flower petals, and feeds the cow treats like apples. My adopted family honored the cow of a neighbor, since they don't keep one of their own.
