With more than a dozen museums, scores of churches, a major University, and five major Plazas, the City of Guanajuato is a cultural mecca. On this particular evening, locals gathered at Plaza San Fernando, a smaller courtyard just off the grand Plaza de la Paz in the city center, for open-air dancing. Ladies in high heels danced on tiptoes in the cobblestone courtyard, while men demonstrated their light-footedness with intricate dance steps. Around the perimeter, locals cracked open picnic baskets on the stairs and clapped encouragement at the end of each dance. This went on until well after dark, with kids running through the plaza, tourists streaming through, and vendors hawking ice cream and trinkets. No matter when you visit Guanajuato, there's always some event in the works.
