Michelle Bendetti Talks 'Steel Magnolias', NTAC's 2026- 27 Season

I spoke with Newport Theatre Arts Center (NTAC) Board President Michelle Bendetti about ‘Steel Magnolias’ and the theater’s upcoming 2026–27 season.

Directed by Kathy Paladino, ‘Steel Magnolias’ (Running from June 25 through July 19, 2026) is a heartfelt Southern drama by Robert Harling. Set in a small-town Louisiana beauty salon, it follows a close-knit group of women who share laughter, love and life’s challenges. Centered on the strong-willed Shelby, a young woman with diabetes, and her protective mother, M’Lynn, the play explores friendship, resilience and the strength of community. Through both joyful and heartbreaking moments, the women’s bonds prove they are as delicate as magnolias and as strong as steel.

Bendetti previously played Shelby in an earlier NTAC production. In the current production, Shelby is portrayed by Sarah Bielicki. The cast also features Giana Garcia as Annelle, Michelle Pedersen as M’Lynn, Jeanetta Behr as Truvy, Judy Jones as Ouiser and Alexandra Bank as Clairee.

Bendetti also discussed the 2026–27 season, which will include, ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’, ‘Almost, Maine’, ‘A Few Good Men’ and ‘Urinetown’. Two additional productions will be announced in July and September. The MTones will return during the holiday season with their annual Christmas performances.

Newport Theatre Arts Center is also accepting tax-deductible donations to support facility renovations that will improve accessibility for patrons who use wheelchairs and walkers as the theater prepares for its 50th anniversary.

Gifts of $5,000 plus will earn you Super Star status as a supporter, down to $100 as an Ensemble member. All donations will go to new seats, carpets, paint, floor light and improve the layout, along with other improvements for accessibility.

$Director Selvamani Selvaraj Talks About his Latest Film Kaantha - Interview With Kaantha now in theaters, I spoke with director Selvamani Selvaraj about the film’s lush period-noir world and its fictionalized take on the lives and ambitions of mid-century Indian celebrities revolving around the legendary director Ayya (Samuthirakani) and his strained relationship with T. K. Mahadevan (Dulquer Salmaan), a film star he helped establish and popularize.. Our conversation explored how he shaped this 1950s post-colonial Madras drama, why he was drawn to these imagined legends, and what it meant to place them inside a story charged with rivalry, desire, and shifting power. $Executive Producer Jon Gunn Talks Season Two of House of David - Interview I sat down with executive producer Jon Gunn to chat about the second season of House of David premiering globally on Prime Video on March 27, 2026. I confessed that if he could make me enjoy Jesus Revolution a film about the rise of the Jesus Freaks Movement via the likes of Calvary Chapel, a church I have deep theological disagreements with, especially as a member of the Greek Orthodox Church of Antioch (Acts 11:26, youll find us there), then I already knew he understood how to craft something compelling across ideological lines. That instinct proved correct, because with House of David, Gunn and his collaborators aren’t just retelling a biblical story, they’re shaping an experience that’s as spiritually complex as it is dramatically engaging. After season one drew more than 40 million viewers worldwide, the series returns not with a quiet continuation but with a sweeping escalation. All episodes drop at once, inviting viewers to fully immerse themselves in a narrative where faith, politics and destiny collide at a pivotal moment in Ancient Israel’s history. Season Two picks up as the kingdom teeters on the edge of collapse. King Saul’s grip is slipping, and into that vacuum steps David, still a shepherd at heart but increasingly shaped by war, loyalty and divine calling. The series leans into the tension between who David is and who he is becoming while the broader world around him transforms. The Iron Age isn’t just a backdrop, it’s revolutionary, reshaping warfare, power structures and the very idea of kingship. Families fracture, forbidden relationships ignite and alliances grow increasingly fragile. It’s a story about transition but also about the cost of that transition. Our conversation circled back often to one central challenge: how do you faithfully adapt scripture while still making compelling television? The son of a pastor, Gunn spoke candidly about the balancing act between theological integrity and what was described as poetic licensing. It’s a delicate line. Too rigid and the story risks feeling distant or inaccessible, too interpretive and it risks alienating viewers who hold the text sacred. What House of David attempts and succeeds at, is finding that middle ground where emotional truth enhances rather than undermines the biblical account. That challenge becomes even more layered when you consider the dual theological lenses the show operates within. The story of David is foundational to both Judaism and Christianity, but the interpretations, emphases and implications differ. Gunn emphasized that the creative team is deeply aware of this tension and had theological advisors to help guide the narrative from both faiths. Rather than flatten those differences, the series tries to respect them, presenting a narrative that resonates across traditions while still allowing space for distinct readings. It’s not about resolving theological debates but about honoring the weight of it. The cast carries that ambition with remarkable gravity. Michael Iskander continues to shape David as both vulnerable and formidable, capturing the internal conflict that defines the character. Ali Suliman’s Saul is increasingly tragic, a king unraveling under the pressure of lost favor and fading authority. Ayelet Zurer and Stephen Lang round out a cast that understands the scale of the story they’re telling—not just in spectacle but in spiritual consequence. Looking ahead, Gunn hinted at a long-term vision that extends well beyond this season. Future installments aim to explore not just David’s rise but the enduring consequences of his reign, the personal failures, the political upheavals and the legacy that continues to echo across religious traditions.
