Checkout this review. This family evaluated dozens of gates before realizing the best option for them was Retract-A-Gate retract-a-gate.com They wanted a retractable baby gate that looked good and was secure...they found it! This is used for two large dogs, a young child, and a new baby soon to be on the way. The installation is up a step using their home-made stair banister adapter. We normally recommend mounting the gate at the lowest level, which eliminates the chance a small child might try to step up, but they are careful with supervision. The installation was quick and easy for this high traffic and important location in the home. Looks matter, and not having a big ugly baby gate in the way was important.
