I review another lovely themed package of Universal Horror titles from Eureka in a beautiful Region B collection. THE INVISIBLE RAY is the penultimate original era Universal Horror film and is more sci-fi in the last equal footing pairing of Karloff and Lugosi. There are many elements of note crammed into this one film which manages to have a charm, atmosphere and elements of others in the canon such as THE INVISIBLE MAN and WEREWOLF OF LONDON especially. Frances Drake is a standout amidst Karloff's driven to madness scientist and Lugosi for once getting to play the charming good guy scientist.
BLACK FRIDAY is Curt Siodmak getting to make a proto DONOVAN'S BRAIN in this little programmer that is part SF, part horror and mostly gangster film. The real draw is Stanley Ridges in a fantastic dual role of kindly professor turned reborn gangster after Karloff's mad doctor performs a brain transplant. Sadly, Lugosi was demoted to a lesser role but still gives it everything.
THE STRANGE DOOR is the first of the final pair of Universal Horror films, both of which are period adventure films with a tinge of the Gothic. Here we find a great adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson with Charles Laughton absolutely devouring every frame in a brilliant performance as the deliciously villainous mad sire. It is a precursor to the later Corman Poe films are is a wondrous high note for Universal Horror to go out on.
