I review the first two film adaptations of Dashiell Hammett's masterpiece THE MALTESE FALCON. They are fascinating attempts by Warner Bros to adapt the iconic novel and go about in VERY different ways. The 1931 film is full of bristling PreCode swagger with a heaping dose of sex and surprisingly most of Hammett's plot. The 1936 film has a terrible reputation for being a comedy remake but what makes it a complete misfire is the loony blending of comedy with chunks of Hammett's story. The tonal shifts are massive and constant.
However without these two films we never would have gotten the 1941 masterpiece film. It also should be stressed that John Huston looked at these two films and immediately recognized the mistakes that had been made when he and others involved insisted on sticking with the novel for the third film adaptation.
Both were released on the 2006 3 disc SE DVD of the 1941 masterpiece version but have sadly been dropped from the Blu-ray and UHD releases making them exclusive to this DVD set.
