On February 13, 2025. The Ellsworth Police Chief responded to a business for a report of an unwanted male subject. The reporting party stated that the subject was cooperative but the business just wanted him to leave. When the Chief arrived, employees explained that the male, later identified as Dean, stated that he was cold so they provided him with a bottle of water and some food. They explained that Dean then sat in a chair and began talking to himself so they decided to call the police.
As the Chief approached the subject, he was sitting down in a chair, eating and drinking his food. It was noted that the temperature outside was in the single digits and that Dean had a cut on his right eyebrow. When asked if he wanted an ambulance, Dean declined and stated that he was just cold and wanted to warm up. After speaking with him a while, the Chief asked what happened to his eyebrow and Dean responded that he thought he may have fallen down.
Dean mentioned that he was unsure how he got to the business and claimed he did not remember his name. He then provided a false name, “Corey”. The Chief informed Dean that he was not in trouble but that the business just wanted him to leave. The Chief also offered to give Dean a ride to a gas station in town. Dean initially agreed, but later decided to leave on foot. Before leaving, he asked an employee for a hat because it was cold outside, and the employee provided one.
The Chief watched as Dean walked behind the building. He then drove around to the back side of the business and observed Dean getting into a vehicle before driving out of the parking lot. Moments later, dispatch advised that the business had reported an employee’s vehicle stolen from the same location. When the Chief activated his emergency lights, Dean accelerated and began fleeing. During the pursuit, speeds reached 90 MPH in a posted 30 MPH zone. Dean then crossed the double yellow lines and drove westbound in the eastbound lane, forcing a squad car off the roadway to avoid a head-on collision.
While fleeing, Dean lost control on a curve and crashed into a heavily populated tree area, striking several trees before coming to rest in a ravine down an estimated 50 foot embankment. As law enforcement arrived on scene, they noticed that the vehicle was severely damaged and requested an ambulance. The vehicle was almost unrecognizable and the roof was significantly smashed down into the passenger compartment of the vehicle. There was steam and smoke coming from the engine compartment of the vehicle so law enforcement decided to extricate Dean from the vehicle in case it caught on fire.
Dean was unconscious but breathing and had a visible injury on his forehead but no other obvious signs of injuries, broken bones or cuts. He was secured in handcuffs in the front of his body while being searched. The Chief located a wallet in his pocket containing an ID card. The information was provided to dispatch, which confirmed Dean’s identity. Dispatch was also noted that he had a felony warrant for his arrest.
Once EMS was on scene, Dean was secured on a stretcher/rescue sled and hauled out of the ravine and placed into an ambulance. EMS transported him to a hospital where he was treated for his injuries and later released. Dean was found guilty for 2nd-Degree Recklessly Endangering Safety and was sentenced to 2 years in prison and 4 years of extended supervision. He was also required to pay $5675 in restitution.
