On September 15, 2024. Officers from the Nekoosa Police Department received a FLOCK notification of a stolen truck. Officers began searching the area and observed a truck with only one headlight illuminated. A records check confirmed that the vehicle had been stolen out of Madison Wisconsin.
Deputies from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department and Troopers with the Wisconsin State Patrol were notified as the officer attempted to conduct a traffic stop. The driver (Leonard) refused to pull over and accelerated to about 60 MPH in a 45 MPH zone. Leonard continued to flee at speeds around 100 MPH before slowing down and entering a residential neighborhood. Leonard went off the road and into someone's yard before exiting the truck and fleeing on foot.
The officer searched the back yard of the residence but was unable to locate Leonard. More law enforcement officers arrived and a State Trooper observed Leonard hiding behind a tree. He was ordered to get on the ground and keep his hands visible. Leonard complied and was secured in handcuffs. An ambulance was called and Leonard said he was scared of going back to prison because he was on probation and fled from a treatment center.
He said he met a guy Saturday night at a bar and was given permission to drive the truck. He went on to explain that the man who gave him permission “passed out from drinking” so he took the truck. EMS cleared Leonard and as he was being placed into a squad car, he said he needed to go to the hospital because he swallowed a bunch of pills. He was then taken into the ambulance to be transported to the hospital.

Vehicle Operator Flee/Elude Officer
3x Unreasonable and Imprudent Speed
2x Fail/Stop at Stop Sign
2x Operating Left of Center
Unsafe Lane Deviation
Leonard was sentenced to 18 months in prison, 3 years of probation, and he was required to pay $2108 in fines.
