On June 28th, 2022, at approximately 4:28 PM, Officers Hunter Mitchell and Jacob Carter of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission were conducting land-based water patrol north of Lake Shipp. While driving down Lake Shipp Dr, they spotted a black male wearing a black shirt and black shorts walking on the CSX Railroad tracks on the east side of the Lake Shipp to Lake May canal. Recognizing that walking on the railroad tracks constituted trespassing on private property, Officer Mitchell pulled his truck to the side of the road on the west side of the canal while Officer Carter approached the subject.
Upon reaching the railroad tracks to assist Officer Carter, Officer Mitchell observed Officer Carter conversing with the individual, who had emerged from the tree line along Lake Shipp. The subject identified himself as "Nashon " and claimed to be fishing nearby without a license. Officer Carter requested dispatch to run a background check on the name provided, but no records were found in Florida. When asked for his real name, the individual reiterated that he was Nashon from Pennsylvania, but another search yielded no results.
Concerned about the unidentified individual's intentions and possible warrants, Officer Carter requested assistance from the Winter Haven Police Department and the Polk County Sheriff’s Office to help identify the subject. However, upon learning of the impending police presence, the subject fled into Lake Shipp, prompting Officers Mitchell and Carter to command him to return to shore. Despite their efforts, the subject swam into dense brush along the shoreline.
Aided by a good Samaritan in a boat, the officers continued to monitor the subject while coordinating with additional law enforcement units. Winter Haven PD provided a potential identification for the subject as REDACTED, who was wanted on multiple felony warrants. The search for REDACTED, conducted jointly with Winter Haven PD and Polk County SO, extended over several hours until REDACTED was finally located in the water near an airboat at approximately 8:36 PM and taken into custody.
Following REDACTED apprehension, Officers Mitchell and Carter transferred custody to Polk County SO and arranged for his transport to Winter Haven Hospital for evaluation. Once cleared, REDACTED was transported to Polk County Jail, where he was booked on charges of resisting an officer without violence. Officer Carter accompanied REDACTED to the hospital while Officer Mitchell followed in his truck. After evaluation and clearance, REDACTED was released into the custody of the Polk County Jail.
