What is the FM Sound Expander Cartridge? This was a cartridge for the Commodore 64 and 128 that has a YM3526 (OPL) chip, the predecessor of the YM3812 (OPL2) chip. While similar to its successor, the chip only has sine waves for all nine channels. The FM Sound Expander Cartridge has a cartridge pass-through port for any C64 game to be inserted, which any game could possibly take advantage of the YM3526 chip. It also has an audio pass-through for mixing with the internal SID chip. Unfortunately, no C64 game ever supported the FM Sound Expander Cartridge.
I created this cover to basically try out the YM3526 in Furnace. This chip and the SID seem to be a great combination. Furnace does allow you to set an arbitrary frequency and even effects commands for the chip's percussion mode, which I decided to also try. Like with the song I uploaded before this one, the module will be available once the final version of Furnace 0.6 is released, as I used a development build for this cover.
