This curiosity or glitch occurs when using the Time Capsule to trade a Pokémon from Crystal with the Male or Female trainer mark back to Generation I. It doesn't occur between Crystal and Gold. After trading the Pokémon back from Generation I to Generation II, the gender symbol is not preserved. This does not affect whether the Name Rater will let you nickname that Pokémon or not.
