WHEN YOU LOSE THE GAME BECAUSE OF AN INJURY 💔
On September 14, 2014, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers suffered a bizarre 19-17 loss to the St. Louis Rams due to a rarely-invoked NFL rule. With less than 20 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter and the Buccaneers out of timeouts, quarterback Josh McCown completed a 29-yard pass over the middle to rookie wide receiver Mike Evans. The play moved the ball down to the Rams' 32-yard line, putting Tampa Bay well within range for a potentially game-winning 49-yard field goal. However, Evans took a massive hit from Rams defensive back T.J. McDonald and was badly shaken up. He tried to get up to line up for a clock-stopping spike but collapsed back onto the turf in pain.
Because Evans was unable to leave the field, the officials stopped the clock with 8 seconds remaining to issue an injury timeout. By NFL rules, when an injury timeout occurs within the final two minutes of a half and the trailing team is out of timeouts, an automatic 10-second clock runoff is applied to prevent teams from faking injuries to stop the clock. Since there were only 8 seconds left, the entire remaining time was wiped out, immediately ending the game before the Buccaneers could spike the ball or kick a field goal.
