LONGEST CHASE DOWN TACKLE EVER 🤯
On January 14, 2006, New England Patriots tight end Benjamin Watson made one of the greatest hustle plays in NFL history when he chased down Denver Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey during the 2005 AFC Divisional Playoff game. With the Patriots trailing 10-6 in the third quarter and sitting at third-and-goal on Denver's 5-yard line, Tom Brady threw an interception to Bailey a yard deep in the end zone. Bailey took off down the left sideline for what looked like a guaranteed 100-yard pick-six.
Ben Watson, who started the play on the exact opposite side of the field (the right numbers) at the Denver 8-yard line, never gave up on the play. He sprinted a total of nearly 130 yards diagonally across the gridiron to catch up to Bailey, a notoriously fast premier cornerback who ran a 4.28 40-yard dash. As Bailey began to slow down near the goal line, assuming he was in the clear, Watson blindsided him at the 1-yard line, launching Bailey and the football out of bounds.
Referees determined that the ball went out of bounds at the Denver 1-yard line, meaning the Broncos retained possession. Mike Anderson scored a rushing touchdown on the very next play to make it 17-6. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick challenged the play, arguing that Watson's hit popped the ball loose through the end zone and past the pylon. By rule, that should have resulted in a touchback, giving the Patriots the ball at their own 20-yard line. Because there was no definitive television camera angle straight down the goal line, the call stood.
