On October 14, 2002, San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Terrell Owens pulled off one of the most famous touchdown celebrations in NFL history by signing a football with a hidden Sharpie marker.
Owens beat top Seahawks cornerback Shawn Springs to secure the touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Garcia. After scoring, Owens reached into his right sock and pulled out a black Sharpie marker. He autographed the football on the spot, right in front of the cameras and a stunned Seattle crowd. Owens ran over to the stands and handed the signed ball to Greg Eastman—who happened to be the mutual financial advisor for both Owens and Springs. Eastman was watching the game from Springs' own luxury suite.
Owens later revealed that the idea was hatched right before the game. He saw a 49ers equipment staff member named "Doc" carrying a marker and asked to borrow it. Doc assumed Owens needed it for a quick equipment note, but Owens tucked it into his sock instead, waiting for the perfect moment to score. Owens had already promised Eastman before kickoff that if he scored, he would sign a ball and hand it to him.
