On January 6, 2007, during the 2006 NFC Wild Card Round, Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo committed one of the most famous blunders in NFL postseason history by fumbling a late-game field goal snap against the Seattle Seahawks. The mistake preserved a 21-20 victory for Seattle.
With only 1:19 remaining in the fourth quarter, the Cowboys trailed 21-20 but drove deep into Seattle territory. Facing a 4th-and-1 at the Seahawks' 2-yard line, head coach Bill Parcells sent out kicker Martin Gramatica for a routine, 19-yard go-ahead field goal.
Because Romo had started the 2006 season as the backup quarterback, he maintained his role as the team's primary holder. The ball came in from the long snapper cleanly, but slipped through Romo's hands as he went to plant it on the turf.
Realizing the play was broken, Romo picked up the loose ball and launched into a desperate run toward the left corner of the end zone. He needed to either score a touchdown or advance one yard to secure a first down. The sideline initially looked wide open, but Seahawks safety Jordan Babineaux chased Romo down from behind, tripping him up at the 2-yard line to force a turnover on downs.
On September 28, 2008, Oakland Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin famously sent kicker Sebastian Janikowski out to attempt a 76-yard field goal against the San Diego Chargers. This stands as the longest field goal attempt in NFL history.
