On January 10, 2016, Minnesota Vikings kicker Blair Walsh infamously missed a 27-yard game-winning field goal attempt against the Seattle Seahawks. The ball sailed wide left with just 22 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, cementing a heartbreaking 10-9 victory for the Seahawks in the NFC Wild Card round.
The matchup was played at TCF Bank Stadium in Minneapolis and tied for the third-coldest game in NFL history, with temperatures dipping well below zero. Prior to the miss, Walsh had actually been the entire offense for the Vikings, accounting for all 9 of their points by successfully kicking field goals from 22, 43, and 47 yards earlier in the game. He had also put together a highly accurate 2015 regular season, leading the NFL with 34 made field goals on 39 attempts.
The snap from Kevin McDermott came in slightly high. Punter and holder Jeff Locke quickly put the ball down, but the laces were pointing in directly toward Walsh's kicking foot instead of out.
While football purists and kickers note that a 27-yard "chip shot" should ideally be made regardless of lace orientation, striking a rock-hard, frozen football directly on the laces can severely alter the ball's trajectory and impact a kicker psychologically.
