SAINTS FIRST HOME GAME AFTER HURRICANE KATRINA 🥲

On September 25, 2006, New Orleans Saints safety Steve Gleason made one of the most iconic plays in NFL history by blocking an Atlanta Falcons punt that was recovered for a touchdown. The legendary play occurred just 90 seconds into the game during the emotional reopening of the Louisiana Superdome, marking the Saints' first true home game in nearly 21 months after the stadium and city were devastated by Hurricane Katrina.

On the Falcons' opening drive, they went three-and-out and were forced to punt. Steve Gleason surged up the middle, entirely untouched, and smothered the ball right off the foot of Atlanta punter Michael Koenen. The blocked ball skidded backward into the Falcons' end zone, where Saints cornerback Curtis DeLoatch dove on it for a touchdown. The touchdown blew the roof off the deafening Superdome, setting the tone for an emotional 23-3 Saints victory on Monday Night Football.
