Lanterns officially premiered tonight on HBO, following veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan and new recruit John Stewart as they investigate what starts out looking like an isolated murder in the American heartland, only to discover it’s connected to something much bigger tied to the Green Lantern Corps. The show is co-created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, and that pedigree is already showing in how tightly this mystery is being built.
Watching Hal get closed out this early into the season completely reframes everything we thought this story was about. This isn’t just about who committed a crime in a small town anymore, it’s about what actually happened to Hal Jordan himself. What an absolutely insane way to end episode one.
