In this AU Kodi and Peg knew each other as cubs, were growing up together, falling in love.
Peg has always been a street dog but Kodi as in canon was following Balto's footsteps, to become a sleigh dog in the future.
He got this job and the older he was getting the less time he had for Peg and street life, so someday he discovered he's not the one for her.
He would never be around to save Peg from danger, he'll "never get the key to the castle", too busy with other things.
And it hurts Kodi 'cause he still loves Peg and treasures the happy memories of their teen years.
