Sega sold this one as the multiple personality game, and the commercial is a kid rattling off every transformation to his family while they completely ignore him. Skycutter, EyeClops, Juggernaut, he keeps changing into someone new, and mom just decides he is having an identity crisis. Watch closely at the end too, because in the shot of the kid actually playing, there is no cartridge in the Genesis.

The game came out in May 1992 and the whole idea is that the hero, a super cool arcade kid named Casey, grabs masks that turn him into completely different characters. Iron Knight smashes through walls in armor. Red Stealth is a samurai. Micromax is a fly that clings to walls and slips through tight gaps. Juggernaut is the chrome skull tank you can see rolling over blocks in the footage. And one mask, Maniaxe, is a hockey mask wearing slasher very obviously based on Jason from Friday the 13th, who throws axes. The story is peak nineties. A virtual reality arcade game called Wild Side uses holograms to build a real world, its boss AI breaks free and starts kidnapping every kid who cannot beat it, and Casey dives in to save them all.

Here is the part that made it a legend. Over 100 levels, and absolutely no save or password system. You had to beat the entire thing in one sitting, and teleporters could fling you anywhere in the game, which is why a lot of players became convinced it was literally endless. It earned a reputation as one of the longest and hardest games of its time.

One more fact that always surprises people. Kid Chameleon was built by Sega Technical Institute in California, a studio founded by Mark Cerny, the same man who went on to become the lead designer of the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. So the guy behind modern PlayStation cut his teeth on this shape shifting Genesis platformer.
