Big banana energy right here. Donkey Kong Country Returns landed on the Wii in 2010 and brought the big ape roaring back after more than a decade away. This was the first Donkey Kong Country game not made by Rare, the studio behind the SNES classics. With Rare over at Microsoft by then, Nintendo handed the reins to Retro Studios, the team known for Metroid Prime, and they absolutely delivered. DK and Diddy have to chase down their stolen banana hoard after a tribe of hypnotic tikis turns the whole island against them. You get the classic barrel cannons and mine cart chaos, plus animal buddies like Rambi the rhino, all wrapped in gorgeous 3D visuals and those unforgettable silhouette levels. It is famously brutal too, so plenty of players met the game over screen more times than they would like to admit. It went on to sell more than six and a half million copies and stands as one of the best platformers on the Wii. Were you team DK back in the day?
