Say hello to Sega's big swing at Nintendo. The Sega Game Gear launched in the US in 1991, and its headline feature was a full color backlit screen at a time when the Game Boy was still stuck in black and green. It was basically a portable Sega Master System, sleek and horizontal like a mini Genesis controller, and you could load it up with Sonic, Lion King, Power Rangers, and hundreds of other games. There was just one legendary catch. To run that bright color screen it needed six AA batteries, and it would chew through them in only three to five hours. The Game Boy could run all day on four, so a Game Gear road trip meant hauling a small mountain of batteries or staying chained to the wall adapter. Even so, it was easily the most successful challenger the Game Boy ever faced, selling around 11 million units. It just could not topple the champ.
