That opening is burned into a whole generation's memory, and most people never noticed they were watching an origin story. The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! premiered on September 4, 1989 in syndication, and DIC crammed 65 episodes into roughly thirteen weeks.
Watch the bathroom bit closely, because it is not a throwaway gag. In this show, Mario and Luigi are Brooklyn plumbers who get pulled down a warp pipe hidden in the drain of a bathtub they were unclogging. That is the entire reason two guys from New York end up in the Mushroom Kingdom. No Mario game has ever shown that moment. The cartoon invented the version everybody remembers, and the 2023 movie finally made the Brooklyn origin official.
The character designs confuse people constantly, so here is the answer. The Princess has red hair because her sprite in the first two NES Mario games colored it red. The animators matched the pixels instead of the box art. Same reason King Koopa is green with a gold crown rather than orange with a shock of red hair. Nothing here is a mistake. It is just a cartoon built from what kids actually saw on their televisions.
Mario was played and voiced by Captain Lou Albano, the WWF Hall of Famer, with Danny Wells as Luigi. Albano shaved off his famous goatee for the part and did it live on daytime TV. Toad somehow ended up with a thicker Brooklyn accent than the two actual Brooklyn plumbers, and his mushroom cap was a hat he could take right off. The Mario cartoons only ran Monday through Thursday, because Friday belonged to The Legend of Zelda.
One last piece. That theme is a rearrangement of Koji Kondo's overworld music from Super Mario Bros., reworked by Haim Saban and Shuki Levy years before Saban gave the world Power Rangers. And it did not stay in 1989. The Super Mario Bros. Movie brought the song back in 2023 as the jingle for the brothers' plumbing business, and its lyrics ended up printed on the movie posters.
