"if we're talking, we're not shooting" - Future Mayor of New York State, Congressman John Lindsay
In September 1959, following on from a successful visit by Vice President Richard Nixon to the USSR earlier that year, the Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev’s would embark on a goodwill tour of the United States at the invitation of President Dwight Eisenhower. At a time of particularly heightened Cold War tensions for the decade, the tour provided a much-needed relief in the midst of MAD discussions. The tour however, was not without controversy and farce, Khrushchev being denied entry into Disneyland, a staggered visit to the Heartlands of Iowa and a mixed reception at the UN, between hecklers and protesting delegates.
Ahead of this historic temporary détente, ITN anticipated and reported on “The America Khrushchev will see” culminating in this fascinating snapshot of American life and perspective from the earlier days of the Cold War.
