On 24 October 1962, Labour Party leader Hugh Gaitskell spoke to ITN’s Richard Dixon about the ongoing Cuban Missile Crisis. The confrontation, widely regarded as the most dangerous moment of the Cold War, had been triggered by the discovery of Soviet nuclear missiles in Cuba, prompting the United States to impose a naval blockade and bringing Washington and Moscow to the brink of nuclear war. Gaitskell accepted the American argument that the missile deployments posed a serious threat and breached Soviet assurances, but he also voiced concern over the legality and risks of the blockade. He expressed regret that the decision was taken without prior consultation with Britain and other allies, or reference to the United Nations Security Council.
