John and Pip Murphy accompanied by Alan and Paul Dwyer, Denis Nolan and Cathal Johnson - Mouthorgan Magic
I went to the wake of the man on the left this evening and tomorrow I'll go to his funeral. His name was John Murphy from Carrig-on-Bannow in Wexford and himself, his brother and his family spent their life promoting the music, songs and culture of Wexford and Ireland. John opened up so many people to music in Wexford while he also brought so many people to Wexford as a result of the gigs he put on in his pub.
I knew John for years and we got on rightly and in 2019 I asked him could I film their session at the 28th Phil Murphy Weekend which was dedicated to his father. It is normally in July but I'm always in Brittany, but that year it was in late August so I went down. I just had my mobile phone and always wanted to get the brothers in a session where it was quiet - where you'd just hear the mouth organ instead of it being drowned out by the other instruments.
And here it is - a very plain live recording but up close where you can hear the other men play with him on their mouth organs and also just joining in and whistling. It's rough and ready but its special to me as John was waked in this very room this evening, literally about 6 few feet away from where he was playing here.
A sad day but one to rejoice too as he gave us so much happiness and joy with his company and his music.
