Peleliu
On September 28, 1944, the 5th Marines were tasked with capturing the small island of Ngesebus and silencing the artillery firing from there onto Peleliu. The island also contained an airfield that was still under construction. Most of Ngesebus fell quickly to the advancing Marines.
On September 29, 1944, units K/3/5 and I/3/5 resumed their attack, pushing north across the island. During the advance, they encountered a Japanese Type 94 75mm mountain gun firing at them at point-blank range. The weapon was swiftly knocked out, and by 3:00 p.m., Ngesebus was declared secure.
Today, that same 75mm mountain gun can still be found on the island of Ngesebus.
