On September 17, 1944, troops of the British 1st Airborne Division landed west of Arnhem as part of Operation Market Garden, with one of their primary objectives being the capture of the road bridge over the Rhine. The airborne troops encountered far stronger German resistance than expected. A 17-pounder anti-tank gun named “Pathfinder” was with “P” Troop 1st Airlanding Anti-Tank Battery Royal Artillery. During the battle the last position they took was on the Benedendorpsweg just east of the Old Church in Oosterbeek. The gun was knocked out during battle. It was later salvaged and restored and is now on display at the Airborne Museum “Hartenstein” in Oosterbeek.
