During Operation Market Garden, troops from the 501st PIR 101st Airborne Division moved into the village of Eerde to capture the strategic road known as Hell’s Highway. These troops would use the Eerde windmill as an elevated observation post to direct mortar and artillery fire on attacking German troops. German troops eventually destroyed the windmill but it was restored and is next to the Geronimo Monument.
