During Operation Market Garden on 17 September 1944, the men of the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne Division, were scheduled to land on Drop Zone A, south of Veghel, Netherlands. However, some troopers of the 501st were misdropped near Heeswijk Castle. Among them was Lt. Col. Frances Sampson, who became entangled with another paratrooper during the descent. The two men plunged into the castle moat but survived the landing.
