The German Panther tank on display in Houffalize fought during the Battle of the Bulge as part of the German 116th Panzer Division “Windhund.” Identified as tank #111, it entered Houffalize on December 19, 1944, during the German offensive to capture the town.
On January 15, 1945, while attempting to cross a bridge over the Ourthe River, the tank plunged from the bridge and overturned into the river below. The Panther remained submerged until it was recovered in 1948.
Today, the restored tank stands as a memorial to the fierce fighting that took place in the Ardennes and is displayed alongside historical information about the Battle of the Bulge, making it an important stop for visitors interested in World War II history.
