Flamethrowers played a crucial role in the Battle of Iwo Jima by clearing deeply entrenched Japanese bunkers, caves, and tunnel systems. Marines primarily used the M2 portable flamethrower, operated by individual infantrymen, to attack fortified positions that were otherwise impervious to small arms and grenades. In the confined spaces of caves and bunkers, flamethrowers filled the interior with intense fire and rapidly depleted oxygen, creating lethal conditions that either killed the defenders or forced them into the open, where they could be engaged by riflemen. However, flamethrower units suffered exceptionally high casualties, resulting in a severe shortage of trained operators as the battle progressed.
