The Malmedy massacre was a war crime committed by soldiers of the German Waffen-SS on 17 December 1944 at the Baugnez crossroads near Malmedy, Belgium, during the Battle of the Bulge (16 December 1944–25 January 1945). Following a brief engagement, troops from Kampfgruppe Peiper killed 84 surrendered U.S. Army prisoners of war (POWs). After disarming and assembling the captured Americans in a farmer's field, the Waffen-SS soldiers opened fire with machine guns. Many prisoners who survived the initial gunfire were subsequently killed at close range.
