Kagoshima is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture, located at the southwest end of the island of Kyushu in Japan. Kagoshima is sometimes called "Japanese Napolinya" because it is located in the bay (Aira Caldera), hot weather and the Sakurajima volcano.
As of January 1, 2005, the city is estimated to have a population of 605,650 people and a density of 1,107.81 people per km². The area is 546.71 km². Kagoshima has an international airport called Kagoshima Airport.

Kagoshima is the birthplace of Saigo Takamori, an important figure in the Meiji period, and also Togo Heihachiro, Japan's biggest naval hero. Heihachiro led the Japanese Navy fleet twice defeating Russia in 1904 and 1905, destroying Russia's reputation as a sea power in the East.

In addition, the city was also the place where the Japanese met Christian adherents for the first time, during the Spanish missionary, Francis Xavier arrived here in 1549 and was greeted warmly.
