The Royal Observatory was founded by King Charles II in 1675. The aim was practical: to reduce shipwrecks. At that time, sailors did not have an accurate way of knowing their position when not seen on land. In 1958 the Royal Greenwich Observatory fully operated in Herstmonceux. At its peak, more than 200 people worked at The Observatory in Herstmonceux and lived in the local community. People who actually operate telescopes in Herstmonceux are called 'night watchers'.
