Jacob Barrett's 2024/25 SOUNZ Community Commission saw the composer working with Manawa Ora | Wellington Regional Hospital Orchestra and Choir to create a suite of Orchestral Lullabies for Matariki. Jacob worked with students from Newtown School to source texts for nine lullabies, each one representing a star from Matariki. For 'Hiwa-i-te-rangi', student Te Aroha provided the text.
Hiwa-i-te-rangi is the ninth and final star of Matariki, and gives us the promise of a bountiful new year. This star was often used as a kind of 'wishing star', to set your hopes, dreams and desires for the following season. This lullaby features beautiful melodic writing passed between orchestra and choir, with the resulting hopeful chorus perhaps demonstrating a collective wish for something bright and beautiful following this Matariki season!
