Jacob Barrett's 2024/25 SOUNZ Community Commission saw the composer working with Manawa Ora | Wellington Regional Hospital Orchestra and Choir to create a suite of Orchestral Lullabies for Matariki. Jacob worked with students from Newtown School to source texts for nine lullabies, each one representing a star from Matariki. For 'Ururangi', student Te Aroha provided the text.
Ururangi is the eighth star of Matariki, and is connected to the wind. Ururangi helps us to forecast the winds and helps us to plan ahead. A wind machine in the percussion section starts off this rhythmic and joyful lullaby, which has driving rhythms from the orchestra throughout, underneath soaring melodies in the choir.
Manawa Ora is conducted by Gary Wilby. Audio recorded by Phil Brownlee. Film funded by NZ On Air.
