Written for, and performed here by flutist Tessa Brinckman, Martin Lodge’s ‘Filleann an Tráthnóna’ (the twilight returns) brings together live flute with fixed media electronics. The flute seems to interact and respond to the electronic sounds that converse with it, envelope it, and surround it. Mysterious and otherworldly, the work makes thorough use of extended techniques including singing and whistling into the flute, multiphonics, and microtonal harmonies. The work finishes with a persistent percussive electronic sound finally fading into the distance along with the flute’s whispered departure, perhaps signifying the twilight gradually taking over the space in which the piece is performed.
Performed as part of Aeon - a concert dedicated to the memory of Martin Lodge, at the Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, 26 April 2025.
